The Treatment
- For maximum results it is advisable that some patients take an over the counter pain medication or muscle relaxant 1 hour prior to the treatment. Individuals have different levels of pain tolerance and some are able to experience the treatment with no medication while others experience discomfort that using a pain reliever will diminish. This will allow the treatment specialist to give a thorough treatment at the most advantageous levels in order to achieve the desired result. If desired, Skintegrity has available the Clarion Pro-Nox Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) pain management system which is safe and used in dentistry and labour/delivery settings.
- The skin will be covered with a cool ultrasound gel over the area to be treated.
- The treatment time is approx 45-90 minutes depending on the area to be treated
- A computer program outlines which depths of penetration can be used on what areas of the skin as it is never advisable to over-treat as this can cause serious side effects that can result in bruising or loss of volume in areas where volume loss is not advisable. - The skin is then cleaned of the ultrasound gel and the patient is free to lie quietly for several minutes to adjust to the new sensation of tightness in the skin tissues.
- The tissues may feel sore like they have done a "work out" with their facial muscles. There are no visible side effects with this procedure which make it even more attractive to those who do not wish to have down time or have to be in public immediately after. This is the proof of the tightening that the treatment provides and it may last for several days to 2 weeks. There is the rare occurrence of bruising which will diminish in several days.

Photodamaged and aging skin is characterized by the thinning of the epidermis and dermis and is associated with a decrease in collagen levels resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, tone and texture changes, and lax skin. Treatment of photoaged skin is based on inflicting damage to the dermis, resulting in neocollagenesis. Damage to the dermis results in the upregulation of the activity of various enzymes, such as metalloproteinases and collagenase that are responsible for the removal of old tissue and deposition of new dermal tissue. Traditionally, laser-based technologies are used to resurface the skin. However, these treatments vary in their efficacy, adverse effects and downtime after treatment.
Recently, fractional radiofrequency (RF) microneedling has emerged as a treatment option. Rather than impacting the entire surface, microneedling causes thermal damage to the dermis in microscopic zones. The intact surrounding tissue accelerates the wound healing process, reducing recovery time and resulting in minimal adverse effects.
Fractional RF microneedling is a minimally invasive technology that involves the use of an array of very fine sterilized needles to create microscopic wounds at various predetermined depths in the dermis, without affecting the epidermis. The delivery of energy leads to the creation of an array of microscopic wounds in the dermis, interspersed between intact tissue. The direct thermal heating of the dermis results in new collagen production and subsequent dermal thickening. The presence of the intact epidermis and the surrounding dermal tissue results in rapid re-epithelialization and thus minimal downtime and risks. Microneedling is effective in the treatment of scars, acne, wrinkles and other signs of photoaging and photodamage. Studies also show that fractional radiofrequency microneedling is effective in the treatment of acne scars, and wrinkles.
